4th of July Recipe Ideas!

Independence Day is one of our favorite holidays because it means lots of barbequing and delicious food! We’ve decided to share some great and festive holiday recipes with you!

Grilled Tilapia Po' Boys with Homemade Tartar Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons chopped sweet pickles
  • 2 tablespoons chopped red onion
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 (7-ounce) tilapia fillets
  • Olive oil, for brushing
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1 to 2 loaves French bread
  • 2 medium beefsteak tomatoes, cut into 8 slices
  • 4 leaves romaine lettuce

Directions

Prepare a grill or preheat a broiler. If using a broiler, line a baking sheet with foil.

Combine the mayonnaise, pickles, onion, lemon juice, and garlic powder in a small bowl. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

Brush the tilapia fillets with some olive oil and season them with the salt and black pepper. Cut the bread into 4 (7-inch) sections, then halve each section lengthwise.

Put the fish on the grill or, if broiling, transfer the fillets to the prepared baking sheet. Grill or broil, turning once, until the fish is cooked through, about 6 minutes. Lay the bread on the grill, cut side down, or broiler, cut side up, and grill or broil until toasted, about 1 minute.

For 1 sandwich, layer 1 tilapia fillet on the bottom slice of bread, followed by 2 slices of tomato and 1 lettuce leaf. Spread the top slice of bread with 2 tablespoons of the tartar sauce and cover the sandwich. Repeat with remaining bread and filling. Arrange on a serving platter and serve.

American Flag Cake

Ingredients:
3 lg. eggs, at room temperature
1/2 C. unsalted butter, softened
1 C. granulated sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
2 C. cake flour, sifted
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 C. milk

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a 9x13" baking pan. If you plan to serve your American flag cake recipe in the pan, just greasing it is fine. If you'd like to remove the cake for a prettier presentation, lightly flour the pan, as well.

2. In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

3. In another large mixing bowl, beat together the butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about three minutes.

4. One at a time, add the eggs to the butter mixture, beating on medium-high speed between each addition. Add the vanilla. Beat about 3 minutes, until well mixed.

5. Stir in a third of the flour mixture, followed by a third of the milk. Repeat twice more until all flour and milk have been incorporated. Mix your batter just til combined.

6. Pour into your pan, and bake until a tester comes out clean, about 20 minutes.

7. Cool completely on a wire rack.

Decorations:

Ingredients:
1 pint blueberries
1-2 pints raspberries or strawberries

Directions

1. If using strawberries, cut them in half.

2. Arrange blueberries in the upper left corner of the cake, on top of the frosting, to symbolize stars.

3. Create bars across your cake by adding stripes of raspberries or halved strawberries horizontally across the cake.

  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila
  • 1/4 ounce blue curacao
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup
  • Watermelon wedge, for garnish (optional)

Mix the schnapps and cranberry juice in a shaker; pour into an ice-filled glass.

Muddle the jalapeno pepper, lemon and lime slices, tequila, blue curacao and simple syrup (to make a batch, dissolve sugar in equal parts hot water and chill) in the shaker. Slowly strain into the glass over the red layer. Garnish with watermelon, if desired.
